Stone Calls for Voters to Choose Candidates, Not Just Parties

Spencer Stone, Democratic candidate for Alabama State Senate District 16, issued the following statement today urging voters to evaluate candidates individually rather than defaulting to straight-ticket voting in the November general election.

"When you step into the voting booth, you are not choosing a party. You are choosing a person — someone who will make decisions about your child's classroom, your energy bill, and the roads you drive to work. Those are local decisions that deserve local scrutiny. I'm asking voters in District 16 to look at what their state senator has actually done for this community over the last 30 years — not just the letter next to their name on the ballot."

Stone noted that Alabama allows voters to cast a straight-ticket ballot with a single selection, automatically voting for every candidate of one party. While legal, Stone argued the practice obscures accountability in down-ballot races where incumbents often go unchallenged and unexamined.

"A 30-year incumbent should have a record. Ask what bills they passed. Ask what they fought for in Shelby County. Ask why our schools are still underfunded and why families are still paying some of the highest utility rates in the Southeast. If the answers aren't there, a party label is not a substitute."

Stone, a teacher and coach at Pelham High School, announced his candidacy earlier this year citing rising costs, classroom conditions, and a desire to bring a working-parent's perspective to the State Senate. District 16 covers portions of Shelby County, including Pelham, Hoover, and surrounding communities.

Stone emphasized that his appeal crosses party lines: "I'm talking to Republicans, Democrats, and independents. I'm not asking anyone to change their values. I'm asking them to hold their representative accountable to this community — whoever they are."
